Description:
A temporary pedestrian and bicycle bridge was built in the Kuchelau harbour in 2020. It was opened to cyclists on 20 January 2021 to provide an alternative route for bicycle and pedestrian traffic during construction works for a road bridge.
The EUROVELO 6 cycle path runs over the bridge to the eastern spur of the Kuchelau harbour basin in the north-west of Vienna. For larger boats and emergency vehicles, the possibility of crossing the cycle path is provided by constructing a movable bridge span.
After completion of the construction work on the road bridge, the pedestrian bridge will be dismantled again.
The Kuchelau Harbour Bridge consists of two panel bridges (standard design) as side spans (each with a nominal length of 30.48m and a width of 3.15m) and a bascule bridge in the middle. The panel bridges are supported on concrete foundations. Besides delivering the bridge structures, Waagner-Biro was responsible for the construction of the substructure (dolphins and abutments), bridge control including remote control activation and bridge lighting.
The movable bridge leaves are equipped with intermediate decks on either side and made of steel. The substructures are positioned on driven-in dolphins and grouted with concrete. The space beneath the intermediate decks serves to accommodate the rear arms of the leaves. Due to the solid one-piece design of the leaves together with the support provided by the rear arms, a very rigid overall construction results that does not require the leaves to be locked to each other.
The bascule bridge is opened and closed by means of electrically driven spindle lift drives. The bridge leaves rotate around the pivot bearing axles.
