Description:
In September 2016, Waagner-Biro built its first panel bridge (Bailey type bridge) in the Czech Republic. It crosses the Elbe River, one of the longest rivers in central Europe, near the town of Opatovice nad Labem, north of Pardubice. Along this river section is located a thermal power plant, operated by Elektrárny Opatovice. For this customer, the bridge serves as an access bridge for the delivery of the coal fuel. Heavy trucks with a total weight of up to 61 tons cross the bridge regularly.
The structure was designed for a long service life and complies with Eurocode requirements. The bridge consists of three spans with a total length of 110 metres (30.48m + 49m + 30.48m) and a carriageway width of 4.20 metres. The customer for this project was the Czech construction company POHL cz a.s.
Assembly of the bridge was carried out within three weeks, under the supervision of a Waagner-Biro Supervisor. The client’s assembly team got acquainted with the assembly of the delivered bridge parts and the launching procedure. Inspection and maintenance of the bridge were also addressed in this training. The company POHL cz a.s. is now well prepared to install future panel bridge projects on its own.
The bridge system is based on modular, prefabricated components, which can be combined by simple means of connection to allow for flexible adaptation to individual spans and loads as well as for very short time of erection.
