Completion: 1999 - today
Project type: Engineered Bridge (Fly-over ramps on various locations)
Client: Municipality Vienna / Rotterdam / Basel

Description:

Fly-over ramps are used when maintenance work on the surfaces or the expansion joints of roadways disturbs the flow of traffic. One fly-over ramp, commissioned by the City of Vienna, also provided years of public and media interest. It was installed just for the off-peak night-time hours. It consisted of 3.35m wide roadway elements and bearers, lifted into position by a mobile crane before and after dilation.

In Rotterdam, they were used from 2005 on the A12, one of the busiest motorways in the Netherlands. Here too, Waagner-Biro helped to develop a fly-over ramp so that expansion joints could be maintained without affecting the traffic.

Switzerland also chose this practical solution. The system was first used on the A2 in Basel, but the federal government has ordered three more ramps from Waagner-Biro. These can also be installed in one night to allow work to be done while ensuring the flow of traffic remains uninterrupted.
