Description:
In the course of construction works taking place at the Austrian Tauern Motorway, Waagner Biro was in charge of building the valley crossing of Gasthofalm, which was at the time of opening in 1973 considered the largest steel composite structure in German-speaking Europe.
The 839m long bridge, reaching over 11 spans, the largest of which equals 90m, spans the Lieser Valley 60m above the valley floor. The steel weight amounts to about 4000 tons. For erection of the bridge, Waagner-Biro developed a self-lifting cantilever arm, by which means each bridge span could be launched in an amazingly short two week period.
